Voter Registration Statistics
& History
West Virginia's 1,137,371
registered voters represent just over 77% of the state's 1.4
million citizen's who are eligible to register. Following
the implementation of the National Voter Registration Act in West
Virginia in 1995, which brought increased registration and made
purging of inactive voters more difficult, the numbers grew from a
low of 884,315 in 1994.
Voters may register a party
affiliation in order to vote in a specific political party's
primary election. Separate tallies are given for each
"official" political party and "no party choice". Others are combined in the
"Other Party" registration category.
