West Virginia Voter Turnout Statistics & History
Average voter turnout statistics for primary and general elections
reflect the same decline in voter participation as national
turnout statistics. Unless otherwise specified, calculations
show the percentage of registered voters who cast ballots in an
election. That number generally runs about two percent
higher than turnout calculated from the race with the highest vote
total.
Turnout at each election is given by county, and
in primary elections, by party when the information was
available. It is interesting to note that the percentage of
voters casting ballots varies as much as 30% from the lowest
turnout to the highest turnout. Sometimes, a highly
contested race or a controversial issue on the ballot will account
for higher turnout in some counties, while a lack of contested
races may account for the low turnout in other counties.
