Security Guards and Security Guard Firms

Are You Eligible for an Individual License?

Specific training or experience is required for a person to be eligible for licensing as a security guard in West Virginia. Complete these questions to find out whether you may meet the training or experience requirements.

Yes No

I have completed at least one year of verifiable full-time employment working as a security guard for a licensed security guard firm. 

Yes No

I have completed at least one year of verifiable full-time employment working as an investigator for a licensed private investigative firm. 

Yes No

I have completed at least one year of training or experience which is substantially equivalent to the one-year experience requirement. 

Yes No

I have already qualified for a private investigator license.

If you answered yes to any one of the four questions in this section, you may meet the training or experience qualifications for licensing as an individual security guard. Actual approval will depend on verified employment or training information.

Are You Eligible for a Firm License?

The qualifying agent must sign the application for a security guard firm license.  That qualifying agent is the applicant and will be responsible for the security guard operations of the firm.

As applicant for a firm license, I meet all the basic requirements for licensing.

Yes No

As applicant for a firm license, I meet the additional training and/or experience requirements for a licensed security guard.

Yes No

My firm is a properly registered corporation or other type of business entity, legally authorized to do business in West Virginia.

Yes No

Every employee or individual conducting the security guard business of the firm meets the basic requirements for licensing, whether or not they meet the training or experience requirements.

If the answer to all four questions is yes, you may be eligible to obtain a firm license and subsequently hire employees to conduct the security guard business.  As the applicant and operator of the firm, you will be responsible for training and supervising those employees.
